Why macrophages are so important against many infectious diseases?
The prime cellular targets for SARS-CoV-2
COVID-19 Infection Sites
This figure shows the prime cellular targets for SARS-CoV-2.
The Covid-19 infection sites are where the MALT, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue exists and works as our first line of defense against all pathogens.
Our first line of defense against infectious diseases
MALT constitutes the most extensive part of the human lymphoid tissue.
The components of MALT are subdivided into GALT (Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue), BALT (Bronchus-Associated Lymphoid Tissue), and NALT (Nasopharynx- Associated Lymphoid Tissue), among others. These (constitute) are the largest macrophage pools in the body.
MALT includes huge numbers of macrophages and dendritic cells as well as T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes.
Alveolar macrophages serve as the front line of cellular defense against all respiratory pathogens and that’s why alveolar macrophages stand as the guardians of the lungs.
Macrophage Activating Factor, MAF is aimed at directly activating the huge numbers of macrophages at these sites

The efficacy of Dietary MAF for hospitalized Covid-19 patients in Ukraine
Effect of degalactosylated bovine glycoprotein formulations MAF and M сapsules on lymphopenia and clinical outcomes in hospitalized Covid-19 patients: a randomized clinical trial
MAF Capsules and M Capsules are dietary supplements produced by Saisei Pharma, Japan. They are designated to modulate the mucosal immunity of the intestine. The main active ingredients of both products are vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) and other glycoproteins which undergo degalactosylation during the process of β-Galactosidase treatment applied to the whole heat-inactivated bovine colostrum in the case of MAF Capsules and to bovine whey in the case of M Capsules. This treatment converts VitD ~ VDBP into VitD-degalactosylated VDBP.
